  • Oddball rear master cylinder??

While rummaging through my extra rear master cylinders this morning (looking for a good one for another member), I discovered that I had two distinct types. Outwardly identical at a glace, but two different bore sizes??!! WTF??

The 'standard' bore size for these is supposed to be 1/2". But I've got two that have 14mm bores (about .551") and uses what looks like may be a 14mm front master piston/seal set-up. Now, these were on a couple of XS11s, but that obviously doesn't mean they're OEM to those bikes...

These aren't the LH/XJ rear; other than the internal bore parts, everything else is the same. They do all have the 'special' type body/reservior as opposed to the standard style.

Anybody got an idea? Another 'slight' change that doesn't appear in the parts book? A newer 'complete' replacement part superceding the original? Or something swapped in off another Yamaha model?

No, the larger bore would increase pedal effort/decrease pedal travel and actually give you a bit better 'feel' when braking; you'd have to press harder to lock up. A fairly common 'upgrade' on some single-front-disc bikes. But what do you do for a rebuild kit? The listed one sure won't fit...
