For what you are trying to do, silver solder would be much easier and just as strong if not stronger.

Hi Folks. After deliberating carefully on the accumulated wisdom here, l I decided not to attempt welding my exhaust pipe!
I used a suggestion by an XSive and used metal 'Jubilee' clips. I drilled a hole through them, just enough for an Allen bolt to go through, then placed a slim nut under the hole and tightened up the clip onto the pipe. The chrome trims then sat straight on the clips and I screwed the cut-down bolts through the holes in the trims and that was the job done.
I've run the engine to see what effect the heat has on the clips re expansion etc and everything is rock solid with no noises or flapping or whatever. Here's a few pix of the finished pipes. By the way, the trims are still available brand-new from a place in Denmark......

Thank you, kind Sirs. The reaction to my idea of welding really made me see sense! It's great to have a wall to bounce one's ball off re ideas, eh? I reckon I'd have blasted a hole through one of the pipes if I'd tried it.........XS1100F 1980 European model. Standard. Dyna coils. Iridium plugs. XS750 final drive (sometimes). Micron fork brace.
