  • Will a MU85B16 fit a XJ11?

Ran a search, waded through the first 7 pages but couldn't find the answer. Gave up, so am posting a new thread.

    Will a MU85B16 fit a XJ11? It has a 90R16 on it right now.

    THANKS.

Oh sorry! English: 140/90-16. I think the "stock" size is a 130.

Do a search on rear tire size. THAT I know has been beaten like a dead horse more than once. In fact, it has been taken to the level of which brands will fit in what sizes and if you can use raised white letter or not. I just do not recall how far back that is or who or what the thread was about to start with.

Yes, you will find a hundred or so threads that discuss it, burried deep within some of them. Some if not most start off with some new guy asking what brand of tire is best( yes, I am sure I asked it at oen time myself along with what oil to use)....almost as sure to start an argumen...uhhh...heated debate as which oil is best. ( Amazing what some people take such personal stock in). Anyway....as I recall, most have not been able to fit a 140. But I have never tried and surely at least one person will swear they have, in the right brand, with out raised letters...

Lol yeah, I no joke read through the first 7 pages of threads the search came up with. Then, before decided to throw my computer out of frustration, I just decided to ask.

I did a quick search on "rear tire size 140" and found several threads on the subject. All of them basically say 130 is the safest bet and will fit. 140 is a crap shoot, some brands in a blackwall will fit, just barely. Most 140 tires will rub the swing arm.

The threads I found were about the XS, and I am not sure if the tire sizes are the same for the XJ.

I will keep looking, sorry if I bothered anyone.

No bother, the XS and the XJ use the same swing arm and basically the same spacing and such, definitely the same final drive as the XS. So it will be the same issue for either bike.

Some have done some mods to their swingarm, nothing drastic, and got up a 140 safely. Don't know if i would buy it though just cause there was a sale.

All a balance that is for sure. Someone has run them:

                      http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread...r+tire+metzler

I consider the ME880 to be a much "safer" tire than a Dunlop K591.

                      Will keep thinking. Thanks guys!

That sizing designation means that is an 85 aspect ratio tire, not a 90, so it would be a bit lower and wider. But actual sizes compared to 'listed' sizes can vary pretty widely between manufacturers. Best bet is to look up the size data for that tire and see what width it is; the widest rear tire that can be fitted to a XS/XJ is 5.4" wide (that's giving you a small margin). Anything wider, and you're looking at either swingarm mods (involved) or spacing the wheel off-center (and you can only gain about 1/8" doing that).

Thanks! I'll pull the specs. You're very helpful, as usual.

EDIT: confounded if I can find the width on their website, unless it's a part of these numbers that I don't understand:

                          "77H MU85B16 M/C TL"

off of the product datasheet .pdf: "MU85B16 M/C77HTL"

One last attempt to see if someone has run the tire successfully...

I dropped by my local dealership after unsuccessfully trying to find the true width on the tire on the Metz website, and they weren't able to tell me either.

Yeah, I couldn't even get their 'product data' pdf to open; Windows 7 doesn't like the older versions of Adobe reader.

You can try emailing their tech department to get an installed width. But to be honest, I doubt if it'll fit; this size is supposedly equivilent to a 140 (which barely fits in a 90 aspect ratio), so at a slightly lower/wider 85 aspect ratio it will probably rub...
