Oil filters may provide SOME oil cooling in the heat of summer, but they may not be good in cold weather because the oil needs to be hot. Also, think about where the oil cooler is located abover the head pipes. That really can't be too benificial for very slow speeds or in stop and go jams.

This comes from Nate who's gonna be installing the cooler that I took off my engine before I installed it in my bike.

Honestly, while I know some love them, and I'm sure they don't hurt, I took it off my 81H engine when I installed in in my bike cause it's incompatible by my Jardine Pipes, and since I'm not willing I'm not willing to give up the Jardines, I'm shipping them to Nate as soon as it stops raining long enough for me to get them out of the garage and pack them up to ship them to him.

In actuality, more viscous oil provides a better (thicker) oil wedge in the bearing. There is an optimal temperature for the oil though, it should be high enough for the water to vaporize and separate from the oil, otherwise the cooler the better. Oops, hope I didn't just change this into another oil controversy!

Even with a cooler in normal driving conditions, I.e. not winter, I doubt you will have much trouble getting to that temp on these engines.

Sorry, the cooler is already promised to Nate, he already has everything mostly plumbed for it, he just needs the rest of the parts as soon as I get them shipped to him.

All the European bikes have the oil cooler. However, it seems a bit ironic that, in the relatively cold UK, we have oil coolers and then, in the US with areas far hotter than here, you don't have oil coolers. I've spoken with several UK owners who don't understand it.

IMO the oil radiator looks good though! We do get US import bikes here in the UK (there are two on eBay right now from Colorado) and they never have the radiator. Maybe it's a styling issue? The rad. looks incompatible with the US laid back appearance... which would tend to indicate that the rad. isn't essential! I dunno. But it looks good!
