  • XJ 1100 final drive

I have a 1982 XJ 1100 Maxim. I want to change the final drive fluid. I see the drain bolt, but where the oil level should be looks like a plug not a bolt. Does it just pop out with a small screw driver. I have changed fluid before in my goldwings but they had a bolt to take out.
Just put new tire on back and seen I needed brake pads so I ordered them.
Have new tire to put on front and then off to get it inspected.
The top of the engine it is leaking oil. Does it take a gasket or just sealer.
I might have a shop fix this leak.
Just fixing up and will be selling soon. Runs good, chrome is in real good shape.Paint has a few spots that could be fixed but overall in pretty good shape. Has 41,000 miles on it.
I need a smoother less vibrating bike. Hands and arms tend to go numb easy anymore, plus the arthritis is kicking in.
    Thanks

Pry that little plastic plug out and below is a 6MM hex, fill to about 1/4" below the top with 80W90.

You can either use a valve cover gasket or RTV, but use RTV around the right side rubber cam plugs.

      XJ11 FinalDrive

The XJ and XS Yamahas do not vibrate when running properly. For as large as they are, these bikes are quite easy to drive. With a spray bottle, spray some water on the exhaust headers after the bike has run for a few minutes to see if all the cylinders are firing. Might be as simple as a bad spark plug or wire. Post back with the results of the spray test.

That is very true. An include 4 like these is 10x smoother than any v-twin could ever dream of being.

The plug Phil is talking about is on the rear center of the drive. Not the metal cap vent on the top center.

          Disposable Dip Sticks

These are from an old thread on the site. Go to the following link and print out as many dip sticks for the middle and final drive fluid levels as you need.

As others have stated, the XS/XJ1100 is a VERY SMOOTH bike. My BMW has more vibration by far than my MNS at 65MPH, but the BMW will run all day at 90MPH without me getting beat by the wind.

Sounds like you need something to take care of that wind for you ray.
