  • Anyone have a Stebel Ear Cannon?

Mine just arrived and I'm thinking about mounting options, but maybe someone has already done it?

        Hey Davinci,

Here's some photos I borrowed from a site:

From the lower right corner image, the mounting tab/tang looks to be horizontal, and the STOCK bracket is VERTICAL, so looks like you could put an L bracket on the STOCK bracket to then mount these in the same or similar location as the stock ones, OUT FRONT, above the engine/pipes!?

I do hope you know NOT to try to use the OEM wiring to provide the POWER for these horns, just to use it for the TRIGGER switch for a RELAY that you would wire directly off of the AUX terminals of the fuseblock!?

            Some interesting Acoustics info!

Was doing some googling, because one of the sites I found touting the performance of the Stebel horns said that increasing the db level of horn "Doubled" it's VOLUME/Loudness! WRONG! Here's a nice table that shows the difference between Sound Pressure levels, and Perceived Human Sound Loudness!

From what I learned decades ago, was that a 3 db increase was the minimal amount of LOUDNESS difference that a regular human ear could perceive. I also learned that once a Stereo Amp reached the 1 Watt of power output to the speakers, that to get an increase in VOLUME of 3 db required a DOUBLING of the wattage output by the AMP! That's why the amps were rated in powers of ~16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512 watts...and that spending much more money for an amp that put out 100 watts wasn't really worth the difference for an amp that put out 64 watts, because you wouldn't be able to hear the difference at only 100 watt output!

So...according to the table below, it takes some 10 db's increase to DOUBLE the perceived human volume affect. And this is then affected by the distance the person is from the sound source.

Just some info for folks that might be looking into getting some louder horns.
Keep in mind the below table is for Stereo/electronic equipment outputting thru Speakers. So...to compare horns, take the Db level they state, and then add 10 db to that level to get a different horn that should sound twice as loud, etc.!

            Level.........Volume........Voltage............... .Acoustic Power
            Change......Loudness.....Sound pressure......Sound Intensity

            +40 dB........16..............100..................... ...10000
            +30 dB........8...............31.6.................... ....1000
            +20 dB........4...............10...................... ......100
            +10 dB........2.0 = double..3.16 = √10..............10
            +6 dB....1.52 times.......2.0 = double..............4.0
            +3 dB....1.23 times......1.414 times = √2...........2.0 = double
            - ±0 dB - - - -1.0 - - - - - -1.0 - - - - - - - - 1.0 - - - - -
            −3 dB..........0.816 times............0.707 times......0.5 = half
            −6 dB..........0.660 times............0.5 = half........0.25
            −10 dB..............0.5 = half............0.316............0.1

            −40 dB..............0.0625..............0.0100........ ....0.0001

dB change Loudness multipl. Amplitude multiplier Power multiplier
Dammit, having trouble getting the spacing to show, will have to put .....since it doesn't want to recognize blank spaces!!

              Hi TC,
I have a Stebel-Nautilus on my rig (is "Stebel ear cannon" a re-name or a joke term or what?)
The mounting bolt that comes with the horn actually fits in an inverted U-slot in the back of the same bracket that your photo shows a hole in the top of.
Also in the kit is the relay that's needed to work the horn, a wiring diagram and mounting instructions.
The horn claims to have 139dB output. Dunno how that fits with your chart but boy, it is seriously loud.

                  hey davinci,
i bought the stebal tm80s, there not an air horn like u have,
but what ever way u have them set up, dont have the
trumpet facing forward into the wind,
                  at speed (around 80k's)
                  air blows into the trumpet
                  baffling its affect. jat

heres a link to the aussie xs site if
u wanted a quick look with the wiring set up.

                    Hi DaVinci,
                    well, kinda, but no close-up.
I made a 1/8" thick aluminum bracket to hang the Stebel "in yer face" from the lower triple tree clamping bolts.
Alas, the rig is tarped down under the rear deck until the snow melts so I can't take another photo for a while.

                        Hi Nate,
"ear cannon" seems to be the cutesy name that Aerostich and others have hung on the Stebel-Nautilus air horn.
TC, if you open their site:-
                        http://www.aerostich.com/ear-cannon-air-horn.html
and click on the alternative photos you can see the sideways (not inverted like my failing memory said) U-shaped slot for the mounting bolt.

TC is correct in that you must use a separate wiring harness and relay, because the horn draws so much current it'll burn out the existing wires. i know from experience that the relay that comes with the Stebel is a piece of crap... Its worth it to buy a high quality harness with the relay already wired to it from...EasternBeaver.com. The guy is in Japan though and right now I'm not sure how well they are given the calamity going on there. But normally you can have it in 5 days! Quality is excellent and its all plug and play. You have to order the single horn harness.
