  • Float Height

I just read Ken Talbots article on adjusting the carb float height using the clear tube method....Does anyone know if the pic showing the fuel in the hose is at the correct height, or is it just a sample shot of how it works?? The PO on my bike totally screwed mine up...

If you have the early model carbs you should dry set them to 25.7mm +/- 1mm so do that first and THEN you can do the wet check with the hoses. With that all your looking for is that they are even and not all out of wacky.

That said, if accurately setting the float height as outlined in the manual doesn't give you the same fuel height in each carb, something is wrong enough in your carbs that it needs fixing, most likely something seriously wrong with the floats. That's why trying to fix the floats is probably NEVER a good idea, it takes very little change in weight to make them float differently, and then you will never get them right without using the tubes, and they probably won't be correct under all conditions either. Best IMHO if the floats don't look 100%, replace them with new ones, I suspect some peoples tuning problems with their carbs may be able to be traced to floats that are not floating properly (this is my personal theory here).

I concur with Cy on the floats. But to answer your original question, the level should be at the top of the washer on the bowl screws.

There is a measurement given in the supplement of the clymers of 12mm below the flange of the bowls IIRC. Check it to be sure though. But that is for the newer style carbs which also have a different float height than the older ones, so there may be no documented height for those.
