  • I had an idea: Custom Tank Emblems

My bike came with a cracked right tank emblem and I thought about replacing it. That is, until I thought " hey, I can make an emblem!"

Im in the process of designing my own custom emblem (crossed cavalry sabers; I was in the 3rd Armored Cavalry in the army and thought it would be neat looking) and thought Id toss the idea out to see if there is any interest in custom design tank emblems.
I thought about the various nicknames folks give their bikes and thought that would be a cool place to start.
Things like "Godzilla" in a nifty font, or a salmon , or "XSive" and so forth.

They would be epoxy resin and have some finishing options (I imagine).
I thought of 2 finishing grades:
    1. Unfinished, which includes the design, casting, sanded smooth, and primed.
    2. Finished, which is primed, painted and then leafed in silver or gold (maybe, if the logistics isnt too harsh).

I dont plan on making replicas of the word "Yamaha" but the emblems would likely need to be an approximate thickness and roughly same size as the regular emblems.
I dont have a business, I was just laid off last week, and I "could" start giving this serious thought if enough interest was generated.

Someone suggested I put "Hardly Dangerous" in the Harley font on mine. It helped spawn these crazy ideas.

I have yet to even make mine as its only in the concept/layout phase at the moment, so I dont know what it will cost or anything yet. Might be by size/complexity.
    What say ye?

I belive TC has GODZILLA ones on his bike. Cool idea though, those tank emblems are one of the hardest parts to find in decent condition.

        Hey Redshirt,

Yeah, I "played" with my manual mill machine and literally "cranked" these out using a 1/8" milling bit, and a LOT of hand cranking to get the diagonal lines on the "A" and such!

If I had a CNC type machine, then doing this sort of thing out of 1/8" thick aluminum plate would be easy....but I don't have and don't intend on getting a CNC setup.

Yes, your assumption of keeping any emblem close to the same size as the OEM is important, to cover up the RECESSED areas behind the badge.

As you stated, YAMAHA own's the copyrights to their NAME and such, so you would not be able to replicate them without risk of infringement lawsuits and such!

Hope you're a good artist, having to carve out patterns and such in NEGATIVE releif to be able to make MOLDS and such!

Good Luck, but you might want to possibly post a POLL inquiring who might be interested in CUSTOM MADE personalized badges vs. their OEM ones. From what I've seen on here, seems like most folks want to restore their machines to as close to OEM look as possible, vs. customizing. Not trying to put a negative on your idea, sorry to hear about your job status, hope you obtain gameful employment soon!

If nothing else, I could make myself custom emblems and one or two others for those really interested in it. Im not trying to get rich or even make wages on it. Just thought Id offer a contribution to this diverse/ecclectic group of XS owners.
Heck, its not like I have anything else to offer here. Im just a dumb wannabiker trying to get my ride running. You fellas put up with guys like me and I wanted to do something for you guys.

I agree a poll would be a good way to judge interest. I might go for a custom. Keep.us updated. Sport for your job loss.

Great idea. I wouldn't mind a set of crossed sabers myself (Oregon National Guard, 1-82 CAV, 19D). I also like the idea of doing the nicknames.

I like the idea but I just can't think of what I would put there. I don't even have a name for my bike yet, just don't know her well enough yet.

Heck, don't even have a nickname for my wife.....

I am planning a set of badges for a project that will use a procedure similar to what is shown here...

I suspect that's what I saw in my earlier post

                    http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread...ghlight=badges

Would really like to go in on something simple and sort of generic.

Need to think through how the screws will be finished.
