Welcome to the site. I didn't see where anyone mentioned the tech section that has info on what to do with a neglected bike. Just make sure you do the things that make you safe for sure. Brakes, bearings, tires, etc.

Those Jardines are nice pipes. I have the ones with the turnouts on mine, and I understand that the Jardines are better a keeping good performance all around, but that's just what I've heard. I know I don't really feel like I'm missing anything down low with mine.

Those highway pegs are just like the ones I have on my 80G. Not bad from what I have seen with them. They seem to work fine, and are reasonably comfortable on the road when I use them.

DGXSER: Thanks! Yeah, I'm starting to realize I might want to go through the back and front brakes just to make sure. It looks like the brake light isn't coming on when I use the front brakes too. Gonna have to figure out the issue there.

greatnw: TY! And yeah, I'm pleased with the bike so far. Those runs do sound like a whole lot of fun. Might have to head out to the coast sometime after I get her all fixed up.

XS1100 Newbie: THX! I visited that section the minute I got the bike home. I think it'll come in handy.

cywelchjr: I'm assuming there is a reason for switching out the stock pipes. There has to be some added benefit I would think. I only rode the bike for 3 miles on the side streets so I haven't had a chance to put my feet up yet. Was more worried about the brakes at the time. Thanks for the comment!

I was told from the guy that I got the bike from that there is only around 4k miles on the engine. 50k on the bike according to the ODO. Next weekend will be "add the new parts" weekend. I'll get the brakes done soon after that.

Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome!

If you freed-up the brake by working the lever, there is a real good chance that the spooge hole is clear. I would definately run fresh brake fluid through all of the master cylinders, lines, and calipers to flush out the old stuff. DOT 3 or 4 is the stuff, not DOT 5. I like using the synthetic stuff.

Aftermarket pipes typically will make more power in one area, but they do so at the cost of power in other areas, typically in the lower range and a loss of torque in the lower range as well. The Jardine Spaghetti pipes IIRC are know for not being as bad at that, and while they don't increase the higher RPM power as much, they don't lose as much down low, and are one of the best of the aftermarket pipes for being as well balanced as the factory system, plus they sound pretty darn good as well, at least the turn outs do.

skids: That's kind of what I was thinking, but since I don't really like the fact that fluid came out of a place that it shouldn't have I'll just go ahead and rebuild it to be safe. I'll be sure to use synthetic. Thanks a bunch!!

cywelchjr: That's good to know. I had no idea Jardine even made pipes that long ago. It does sound pretty frickin' cool. Seems to have more of a rumble than I remember my dad's bike having.

                    hi Twanginblues,
                    nice buy on the bike,

as the others have stated a full rebuild kit for the rear
master cylinder and when your bleeding the rear brakes,
id be cracking the bango bolt instead of the bleeder as it sits higher,
and will be easier to get the air out of the system, jat.

My MNS had a set exactly like those on it when I bought it. I have no idea what kind they were, but I gave them to a fellow XSive when I upgraded to 3-point crash bars.

petejw: Thanks. I have a rebuild kit on order, should be here this week. Sorry to be a dummy but what is a bango bolt?

CatatonicBug & Rickrod3: Thanks for the comment. I'm not real sure how much I'm going to like the pegs. I have the bike on the center stand and put my feet up on them. It seems like there isn't a whole lot of distance from the engine casings to the pegs for my size 13 boots to rest on. I'll be lucky to rest 1/2 my boot on them without touching the engine. I guess I'll figure it out when I hit some streets that have a speed limit of more than 35. My 5 minute bad brake journey didn't give me much time to learn the bike or figure out what is comfortable. Was more worried about heating up the brakes and frying the rotors and calipers.

I just received some new mirrors today. 1/2 the size, decent chrome and they look pretty good. The originals are kind of big for my taste and had a bit of rust on them. Guages arrive tomorrow and the rebuild kit and carb boots should be here by Friday. I really want some new grips but dang, the ones I want, iso grips, are $57 on ebay. Might have to wait a bit for those. Just got the bike 9 days ago and am spending too much on her right now. Time to hang low for a bit...lol.

                          Thanks guys!!

the bolt that screws thru the brake hose and into the calliper,

or another way would be to stick a hose on the bleeder and have it
loop up higher than the calliper and then back down into a clean
                            jar with some brake fluid.

the bleeder shouldve been designed to sit
at the highest point on the calliper.
