  • Tank Question

I've looked at a lot of postings and am still a little confused regarding whether or not a Standard tank will mount on a Special frame.

Just bought a second 1979 XS1100 Special (will post pictures when I pick it up) and would like to mount a Standard tank if that works.

Any thoughts or pictures would be a big help.

    Thanks,

The tank absolutely will fit in the frame. You will need standard petcocks, the mounts are larger on the standard, and dump the octy. The only other difference is that the hole for the fuel gauge sender is on the opposition side of the tunnel.

You will also have a problem with the seat. With the standard tank you will have to modify the seat to make room for the tank, as while it will drop into place on the frame, it goes back a little further and interferes with the seat cushion and I belief the seat pan as well, requiring that you cut a little off of the seat at the front. I would not do any cutting of the seat until you have the tank and have it mounted though, so you can make sure to cut the correct amount to clearance the tank. I understand going the other way leaves a gap between the seat and the tank.

NO mods. to seat are necessary to use the standard tank or the Venturer tank. Front portion of seat cushion may ride up a bit on tank, but will help keep you from sliding forward too.

I didn't have to mod my SG seat to use it with a standard tank. It's tight but it fits.

              Thanks guys.

              Sounds pretty straight forward.

                Hi Doug,
                here's mine:-

                Tank drops straight on.
Must have it's own filler cap and gas taps because the Special's are different and don't fit. Ditch the octy and run vacuum lines to each tap or swap the taps innards left to right to give a manual off position.
Swap in the Special's thermistor fuel level sender to work the red light.
The sender's wires have to point forward or the sender will be upside down and not read right.
Betcha those who didn't crop their seat pan didn't notice or don't care that the front seat latch won't fit in it's pocket.
I had to crop my seat pan 5/8" short in front and pound a notch to clear the tank recess drain line to make the seat front latch engage properly.
