RECENTLY MY 82 XJ POPPED OFF THE #1 VACUUM CAP ON THE CARB BOOT. I THOUGHT IT ODD AND REPLACED IT FROM MY YAMAHA DEALER (AROUND 3 BUCKS). YESTERDAY WHILE RIDING I NOTICED A FLUTTER AT HIGHER RPMS AND A NASTY BACKFIRE. CLOSER INSPECTION REVEALED I HAD POPPED THE CAP OFF THE # 3 CARB BOOT. HAS ANYONE ELSE EXPERIENCED ANY SIMILAR PROBLEMS.

Do your vac caps have the stock spring clip things that hold them on? If not, and the carbs backfire, it will pop them right off.
But then, your carbs shouldn't be backfiring either...is your air filter clean? Backfiring when cold is usually becuase of lean condition.
