Replacement gas tank

Hi

I bought last fall a nice 1980 xs1100 (not a special) . I want to give it a new look. Change parts (smaller lights, smaller seat, etc...) But I don't want to midify the frame if i want to give it his original look.

My question is ... there is some other gas tank does fit on it? from other models ... xj ... xvs ... or ?? Maybe from a Suzuki? or Honda?

Any idea?

If you have a standard, you can switch to a xs11 special tank without too much trouble. You will need a fuel octi and the rest of the parts in the tank...petcocks ect.....they won't go from one to the other.

If you d not mind a little bit of fabrication work the XJ1100 tank can be made to fit the XS11. TopCatgr, one of the admins here, has one on his XS11 Special, but it would also fit a standard.

As XS11Lover mentioned, petcocks do not swap directly between tanks, you can get after market ones for them though. The Octi mentioned will be needed to keep the vacuum operated fuel shutoff feature if that is what you want. Many Special owners choose to use the turn to the off position on the petcocks when shutting the engine down instead.

I am not aware of any other tanks that would be a direct replacement, or even mount up without either frame or actual tank madifications (the mods for the XJ tank are more just to mounting flanges).

Hi Guy and welcome,
be assured that your English is far better than my French even after my 40 years of reading Canadian bilingual food packages.
Yes, the Special tank will fit a Standard. It must have it's own fuel filler cap and fuel taps because the Standard ones will not fit. Also the Special tank's thermistor fuel level sending unit will not work with the Standard's fuel gauge.
All these minor differences can be got around but what can't be avoided is that the Special tank holds only 15 litres of fuel vs the Standard tank's 20 litres.
The 262 kilos dry weight of an XS11 makes it a hard push to the next gas station, eh?
