  • Newb carb question

OK Gents, after looking at JacobAndrews photobucket pics, I gotta ask. Is my 1978 standard E supposed to have that god-awful looking vac/fuel line thingy attached to the carbs?

If your talking about the Octy then no. The standards (if you have the standard tank) have vacuum petcocks so there is not need for the octy.

      Octy

No octy. But you might want to rebuild your petcocks because they can be a pita. We think they may have been designed by an evil spirit!

That fuel valve is a safety feature to shut off fuel flow to the carbs when the engine is not running, a vacuum operated valve. All of the Standard model bikes have that same vacuum operated valve contained inside the petcocks (factory petcocks anyway). For some reason, Yamaha decided to make it one valve instead of two for the specials and run all that bloody fuel line all over the place.

If you do decide or need to rebuild your petcocks on the standards, there has been an issue in the past that the valve in the rebuild kits "plunger" is just a fraction smaller/shorter than the stock one and has caused sealing issues.
