the xs 750 and 850 works and it apparently works better for people that want to leave it on all the time. Again here are a few of the 1100 and the 750 ones as well

I'm wondering what I'm missing. I bought an XS850 lever for my '79 Special and it doesn't really fit right. When it's mounted on the shaft properly and turned in, it rubs on the airbox. Also, when you rotate it downward it hit's the stock exhaust

I think it depends on where you cut the shaft for the set screw.
I've got one mounted on my 78E from an xs750.
Looks cool! Hope I never need it.

I think only the 78s and 79s had a shaft for the kicker.

There's been mixed reports on how much of the kicker mechanism you'll find in the later bikes. Some only need a handful of parts that can be installed by removing just the clutch cover and I believe the clutch, while others may need the cases split. If you search the archives, you'll find posts that detail this.

I did not have to do anything with my clutch on my 78 and the kicker came right out. So unless you need to split the cases I can't see anything needing to be done other than stick it in the hole.

Some 80's reportedly don't have the parts over in the transmission side of things, which need the cases split to get in and out according to those who have done it, and I understand that none of the 81's or later have that part (which explains why my current engine doesn't have it because it turns out it's an 81 (even though they sold it to me as an 80).
