    Ok thanks everyone for the advice.

    I attempted to clean the origial filter tonight with some soap and hot water and the thing fell apart. that tells me it probably would not have worked very well anyways. Since I will shortly be switching to pods I am going to go the cheap route and use the existing metal frame with some unifoam sheet.

      I have a unifoam filter unit, which consists of the metal frame with a kind of large tube of unifoam filter material wrapped around it (ok, actually the tube of foam goes through it, and then is folded over top and bottom and just meets itself on the outside. I clean and oil it every so often and it seems to work just fine.
