  • '78/'79 seat on a 1980 XS standard

I found out the 1979 seat I bought on Ebay will NOT fit my 1980 because of where the ignition unit is located on the rear fender. Anyone else try to retro fit an earlier seat on their 1980 or later?

78-79 standard seats interchange and I think those are the only 2 years that interchange. Specials are different between years, late standards are different as well. You could modify the seatpan but you have to decide if its worth it for yourself.

Yeah, it sucks because I dont like the giant sofa seat that comes stock on the '80. I wonder if just a matter of moving the ignition unit?

Have you considered getting your old one re-upholstered?
Have it fashioned to your liking.
Look at the seat on my 78 (pics in signature), that is the original pan reshaped and covered.

That's what it is, but to do that you'd have to extend all the wires to the TCI as the box mounts on the rear fender on the '78-79 bikes. You'd also need a same-year rear fender with the mounting points. If you were going the other way, it's easier...

                    New Seat

I just got a new seat from Saddlemans. You use your existing pan and they ship you new foam and leather. It is a really nice seat for around $130.00. I believe the model number is XY156.

                      Hi Lucky,
apart from the iggybox being in the way the seat fits OK?
So dremel a window in the seat pan, hog out the foam to clear and pop rivet a sheetmetal pocket in there.
                      Or move the box.
