  • Starter button

went to start the bike today and the starter button flew out of the housing.
Have pieces, but does it require a new housing which is all the throttle and kill switch?

Might just need a new starter button. xschop makes new ones out of stainless, or you could steal the horn button in a pinch.

If you do need a new housing, mikesxs sells them for $54 I think.

However, if it came out its almost certain the button is the problem. Often the ring around the outside breaks off and out comes the button. I have seen several times on ebay replacement buttons available, pretty much the entire XS line used the same button, and they are only a few bucks. If you find a button for any pre-82 or so XS, it will work on our bikes. I stole the starter button from my XS400 for my 1100 since I'm rebuilding the 400 so I don't need the starter button for a couple of years anyways.

Lost my button close to twenty years ago. Been starting it with a house key or a screwdriver ever since. I figure if I am stupid enough to leave my key in the ignition, the lack of a button might keep the casual joyriding thief from riding off with my beloved XS while I'm in the gas station. Cheap security...
