  • Oil filter O-ring

    Hi all,

I'm trying to finish changing my oil, but the large o-ring on the filter cover (dog bowl?) is not sealing up. Already checked the ears on the cover and they do not appear to be mis-aligned. After dumping about a quart of oil on the floor of the garage and discovering the leak, I notice that the o-ring is both compressed in spots, and damaged in one area.

So - looking to replace the o-ring and none of the local auto parts places have anything close to match it up with. I'm on the verge of giving up and buying one from the local dealership, but I thought I would try this first. Does anybody know if a 126 x 3 mm O-ring sounds correct? Anybody tried it? I can get them in a 10 pack from McMaster:

    http://www.mcmaster.com/param/asp/PS...ainWidth=1002#

At 6.47 for a 10 pack, I could put away a spare and have several left over to share with anyone in need.

If somebody has a better idea, I would welcome the suggestions.

    Thanks,
    John (XSive_Speed)

most after market brands of oil filters come with the o ring
both for the cup and the bolt, have u got a spare parts
place to suss out, the genuine filters dont come with the
    o rings.

also when u fit them smear a little oil on the seal.

New ones are 3 mm thick and 117.2mm diameter so it looks like those 3x126 will be too big

The case of the missing o-ring

Hmm, ok. I'll re-check my filter housing. Is 117.2 the ID or the OD? the 126 I as giving as an OD, so that would make it 119 ID. That puts it within reach of your measurements. When I measured my o-ring, it measured at 125 OD, but I could not find that as an available size.

I have two Emgo filters here, and neither one came with a replacement o-ring. I'll keep that in mind for future reference (what I get for buying the cheap filter).

117.2 is the inside diameter, I got it from the comments section on the Yamaha microfiche so it had better be right.

Some aftermarket oil filters that include the large O-ring are : K&N, HifloFiltro, Fram and Champion (this has both the small & large O-rings)

If you can find an o-ring of the correct diameter but in a larger overall size, you can cut it down and use an industrial cyanoacrylate glue to make one the size you want. Loctite sells a CA adhesive that is made for this specific purpose. I've been doing this for Tsunami for years.

You cut the oversize ring with a sharp knife, lay it in the groove of the filter cup to determine where to cut for size, apply just a small drop of adhesive to one cut end of the ring, than use the cup as a guide to touch the two ends together. On clean, fresh cut rubber, this type of adhesive sets in about a second.
