  • 79 Coil replacement- MikeXS

Just making sure this is the correct coil for my bike. It says that its for a non contact point system, however I saw in another thread here that someone used it on the same bike.

The coil I'm questioning is here. High Output Replacement Ignition Coil Part #17-6803

I'm guessing this is the right one though. Ultimate High Output Coil Part #17-6903

Thanks in advance for any help.

A few guys have had issues with mike's black coils (6803)
I know the green coils (17-6810) are very popular and haven't heard of any problems with them. I have them on two of my bikes .

I haven't heard anyone using the Pamco 17-6903 but that's not to say they won't work.

I've heard of some having issues with the 6803 coils, and some having no problem with them. I've heard nothing bad about the 6810's and have heard nothing about the 6903 coils, although they LOOK like they would work. Personally I plan on going with the 6803's regardless of the issues I've heard of and if they fail, I'll just pop for the more expensive ones. I do have to say I like the screw on cap capture system better than the press in type though.

Thanks! Well I'll probably just go with the green 6810's, just because I don't want to take a the risk and possibly spend more money later. But my next question is, are they all 90 degree caps? I keep thinking 2 of them are 45's but they don't have any on the website.

I'm at $138 and either I spend 13.68 on shipping or spend another $12 and get free shipping

I have been running the black coils(6803) with no problems at all, but then they were out of the green ones (6810) at the time.

            Hey Jacob,

Yes, all they have are the 90 degree ones. The 45's were to help keep/direct the plug wires away from the head/valve cover better, but with the much thicker insulated wires, I've got the 90's on all of mine and the wires are lightly laying on the valve cover without any problems, but you could zip tie them to something else to pull them up off the cover if you wanted to.

I, too, have been using the black ones without any problems. A few folks tried to solder their connectors and I vaguely read about where they didn't recommend and even warned against trying to solder them, the internal wires would come loose. Others have commented that the units just failed?

actually they are 120 degree if you do go looking for them.

Did you order and plug wire? The coils don't come with any.

Thanks for all the help. No I haven't ordered anything yet, I only planned on getting the coil from Mike, however since I had to spend 150 any ways with shipping or without, I figured I would just order the caps, the wire I was going to get when I got the plugs from the auto parts store. I will just order 4 90 degree ones, I just figured I would check first, thanks again.

I have been using the black ones for over 2 years with no problems. They. Will go bad if you pull the. Wire off the spark plug while its running. As long as you don't do that the black ones are fine. However get good wires I bought the yellow ones and they are total crap. After. A few months they started arcing everwhere!!! I replaced them with 8mm msd wires.

Green Dyna coils seem to be good. I have some on mine and they produce really good sparks. They look better quality to me than the black Mike's XS ones....... no doubt someone will correct me if I'm wrong though.

The green Dyna coils are a dead easy fit to.... just about straight bolt on. All you need are 4 little L shaped brackets which you can get from a hardware store for next to nothing.
