exhaust wrap?

does anyone know if putting exhaust wrap on the header pipes will cause the engine temp to go up?

p.s. thanks for the help on past threads I made. My 80sg is finally up and running. I had to keep going up in jet sizes because of the freeflow exhaust and intake pods.

The makers of the exhaust wrap products claim that it helps keep the engine cooler and increases power by improving exhaust gas flow speed through "scavanging". The truth may or may not be close to their claims, and I can't imagine how could be, although I'm sure some who have tried it will claim it does work that way, if for no other reason than to justify the expense.
What I have been told by those that do us the stuff is that it smells really bad when you first install it untill it dries, and if you get caught in the rain, it stinks all over again with the added benefit of the smell wafting up between your legs at the traffic light.
I have read also that it can accellerate corrosion of the pipes, but have not heard this first hand from anyone.
I will say it looks good though, especially if your pipes are in bad shape. However if you are going for a cosmetic fix for your pipes, consider VHT paint (header paint) available at most auto parts stores, in a choice of colors, and at a fraction of the cost. If it turns out you don't like the painted look, at least you have then pretreated the pipes against the alleged corrosion problem before wrapping them.

It makes your pipes rust...and apparently smells like nasty wet dog when wet.

thanks for the info guys. I think I will wait untill I have a extra set of headers before I wrap them.

Found some images made by a FLIR of wrapped/unwrapped exhaust headers/cyls of a guzzi....

Cylinder temp was lower when wrapped, but headers were about twice as hot.

One thing that was noted in that link in the responses was that the pic was on 2 different cylinders so the head temp COULD be from slight tuning differences.

It really depends on why you are looking at the wrap. Do your pipes look like crap and you want a super cheap looks fix, personally I would rather get some 2000 degree paint and clean and paint the pipes. If your looking for the heat scavenging effects, you are MUCH better off doing ceramic coating, plus it lasts forever and protects the pipes. If you are looking for thw wrapped pipe look, well then there is nothing else you can so. Just remember it is going to ruin your pipes due to rust and excess heat over time.

Also, I beg you not to wrap a oem exhaust, or even oem headpipes, they are getting harder to find and I am sure someone would buy them from you/trade exhausts with you!

Im just going to paint them for now. I will wait untill my shop is set up so i can make my own stainless headers to wrap. I know you might ask why wrap stainless. I just like the look. Im not going to wrap the oem headers because i dont want to destroy them. thanks for the advice.
