new bike. what to do?(maintenance)
i picked up a 1981 or 82? xs1100 special a few weeks back for 950.00 80,000 miles on it. what things should i be looking at replacing? the oil and brake fluid is an obvious one. but what about things like...cam chain? clutch springs? the tires are good. it runs good. shifts fine. just the legendary clunk into gear. i have a 79 with a 24,000 mile engine. should i do an engine swap? dont really want to if i dont have too. also planning on selling that spare bike for 350.00 tonight. it was a bobber project i lost intrest in so the back frame is hacked off just before the springs.

First off the '82 is an XJ Maxim. So if it doesnt say maxim then its not an '82. Also the XJ has the swirly wheels (as does the 81 midnight though). Either way check your steering neck VIN number here

I would say that if its not clinking and clacking like the cam chain is loose, leave it. If the clutch doesn't slip leave it. Put some miles on it so that you can get a feel for it and get all the cobwebs shaken out and then make a decision as to whether or not things need to be done. But like you said oil and brakes are a sure thing.Nathan

Great. Another frame bites the dust. Too bad you didn't loose interest BEFORE you hacked it upit was a bobber project i lost intrest in so the back frame is hacked off just before the springs.

Replace ALL of the fluids, brakes, middle and final drive, engine oil and filter.
Check valve clearance, and adjust cam chain.
Sync carbs and adjust idle.
Check DOT date on tires, replace if older than 5 years, DO NOT RIDE if older than 8 years!
IF you see nothing wrong after that, just ride it! You should be able to get about 120K with little or no problems.
