  • Transmission jammed

I just took my project bike,(78 XS11), for a little spin around the neighborhood after getting it running.
Was working fine until I pulled back in the yard and put it in neutral.
As I was setting there I reved the motor a couple times because it was missing slightly.
About the third rev,(not redline or even close), it seemed to jump into gear lerched forward and stalled.
Now I can't get it into neutral or shift out of the gear it is in.
Seems to be second gear, but can't be sure.

    Anyone experienced anything like this?

    Yes,
Look up the transmissions in the repair section. I would start with the Left cover, behind the shifter. There is a "star" washer that keeps very important parts in place. If something happened, it could cause the problem you described.
I do have one bike that went into two gears at once, but I've NOT pulled it apart as of yet. I have also seen broken teeth on the main shaft, and that would have the same effect.

      trans..

Just replaced my primary gears and secondary for broken gear teeth, I may be wrong but I noticed during the process that there is a shaft that runs through the cases with a flat spot machined on it.......if that shaft moves (turns) one way or the other it comes in contact with one of the gears...locks it down. As I remember this shaft is part of the oil pump setup.....correct me if I've got it wrong.....

Your thinking of the shift forks shaft. On the end nearest the clutch, inside the clutch housing, the oil pump idler gear mounts on the end of it. Also on that end, is a pin in the shaft the fits into a slot in the engine case where it goes through to keep it aligned.

The notch you mentioned allows the shaft to clear the middle driven gear on the end of the countershaft. The afore mentioned pin keeps the flat spot aligned.

Just for information purposes, the other end goes into the shifter cover area and on that end mounts one of the shift pawls. The one that actuates the drum and connects to the pins under that star washer mentioned often.
Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

When your work speaks for itself, don't interrupt.

Was able to get the trans unstuck by pumping it backwards and trying to shift at the same time.
I was able to ride it and it shifts fine now, but still acts like it wants to jump into gear from neutral when sitting still and reving it a bit.
Happy it is freed up, but not to happy with the whole issue.

Thanks for the advice so far. Maybe this development will shed more light on the potential problem.

I would think you may have a bent shift fork. I would guess the fork for 2nd gear, as it's the one usually "banged on". Used parts are available, and I think you can still get new parts.
