  • Rotor Resurfacing

This has come up multiple times, with most reporting difficulty on finding anybody to do it... Well, here's a vendor: http://www.site.truedisk.net/Home.php

No affiliation, etc, just a FYI. One intriguing aspect of this would be the possibility of 'cutting' the XS rotors to fit other calipers, as one of the problems with the OEM rotors is their thickness compared to what later-model bikes use.

        Original Thickness?

I have seen several used rotors for sale and they will often give a thickness number with them, does anyone know what the thickness was on a new one?

Yamaha only gives a minimum thickness (6.5 mm, or .260"), but all that I've personally measured have been about .270" thick, give or take a few thou.

Rotors were an overkill on these bikes like alot of the rest of the mechanical aspects of the bike. They also will eat any pad, organic, metallic, etc. as they are some of the hardest rotors I've come across. Over the thirty year use I have used bout every type pad made cept for ceramics on these rotors. In comparision, I use nothing but OEM pads on my ST. Its rotors apparently are not as hard because it's reccomended not to use sintered or any other aggressive braking material other than OEM unless you plan on changing rotors from excessive wear.

Do they really do the XS1100 SS rotors? I'd heard that these can't be done using traditional turning methods, and require a special grinding method rather than a traditional turning method like auto rotors get.

Cy, I called and talked to them; I was told 'no problem'. They do grind these, as the guy said that trying to 'turn' bike rotors is a waste of time. If you look at their web page, you'll see a dished rotor laying on the table on the right...

I saw the dished rotor, but was thinking it might be an XS rotor. That's good to hear that they do ours, I'm thinking I need a replacement rear rotor, and thinking about the HD caliper thing, maybe it's something to think about, changing the thickness to match them rather than trying to mod them to the rotors.

                    Resurfacing

Last February I sent the rear rotor to Portland Engine Rebuilders in Oregon. They had an add in e bay and I e mailed the guy. After a few conversations I was convinced he knew what he was talking about and sent my rear rotor to be resurfaced and drilled. Here's pictures of how it came out. I am very pleased and am sending the 2 front ones to be done soon.
I can't remember the website, but his name is Chris Schumann and here's his e mail.

                        Cost

Nate, I don't remember the individual cost, but for both things in a 36 hole pattern it was $90 plus shipping.
