  • Quick carb question

I disassembled my carbs today for cleaning. The washer under one of the screws covering the pilot jet was missing. Does it really need to be there?

Also - is it o.k. to soak the float valves in Pine Sol?

    Thanks

I wouldn't soak them in the pinsol for terribly long. I soaked mine in there for about 4 hours. Just make sure you clean them off really well and dry them because if you leave.the pinsol on them it can very easily star to oxidize the aluminum.

Yes the washer needs to be replaced.

Also did you remove all the airjets and the enrichment circuit parts?

There is a washer under the main jet but there should only be a screw that covers the pilot jet.

I don't know what to say Nat . In my Yamaha manual it only shows a washer under the main jet . I have never seen a washer under the plug screw for the pilot jet but I have only rebuilt a few sets of the early carbs.

Nate, the only thing I didn't do is separate the 4 carbs. Took all the tubes, screws, jets out.

I really do not see the need for a washer under the screws but I'm far from being an expert!

The pilot cap screw is not anything special. All it does is close off the pilot jet from the bowl making it take fuel through the main jet. If the rest have a washer, put a new one in. Mine are aluminum so I would suggest a soft metal washer like that or perhaps brass.

                Not really a big deal.

Saw the same thing from a washer standpoint on a set I worked on, 3 of 4 had one. (still need to check the fuel Ts on those, but it has been COLD in teh garage). My only thought is how far does the screw go in, is it enough to start to block the crossover passage without the washer?

My early carbs (1979) have washers under both screws. Brass under the main jet one and thinner, alloy ones under the other screw. .. The Haynes manual shows this too....

Hmmm... neither my Clymer or my FSM show those washers, but they do exist. Like James says, there's brass washer under the main jet and a thin aluminum one under the pilot jet screw.

Good point. That would be the only concern I think, unless the washer helps the seal the contact surface.
