Hey guys, I drained the oil out of Daffodil for the first time, and I noticed that there was no washer and spring under the oil filter. Obviously the previous owner has left it out. Does anyone know of a reason why he would do this. How important is the spring.

If you didn't trow the filter away, check in the filter, sometimes the spring gets pushed into the rubber under the filter wheb POs forget the washer. If they are both gone, they were probably forgotten ot lost over the years.Nathan

you surely need the spring and washer. Didja check atop the filter to see if the dreaded PO didn't assemble it backwards?Fred Hill, S'toon

The spring and washer keep the filter pushed up to stop oil from bypassing the filter. So, without them, in the right order, all the oil will bypass the filter.
The washer often gets tossed with the removed filter as it tends to stick to it. But it is not often the spring is gone. It is typical that it get pushed into the filter when someone assembles without the washer.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

I just went out to the shop and double checked. No sign of the washer nor the spring. I'll have to pick them up. I wonder how long it has been like that.
Thanks again for the quick responses. I'm sure I'll have more questions in the next day or two as I'm going to attempt the "Dremel fix". When I first got the bike, I had it running on the centre stand, and I thought it had a really hard stumble, but it was only in one gear. After reading a few threads I'm thinking it was actually going in and out of gear. I figure now is the best time to investigate rather than find out about it in the spring, when I want to ride.1981 Special- currently under construction

Another option (better IMHO) is to get TC's spin on oil filter adapter SOFA for short. It makes it so you can use the spin on filter for a GW1500 which makes it much less of a mess and on top of that they are FAR easier to find and no stupid washer and spring to keep track of.Cy

On the centerstand running in gear, it will surge through the drivetrain not having a constant load on said drivetrain.........does NOT necessarily mean there is a 1st/2nd gear issue. Unless you have already ridden it, u need to do so putting a load against drivetrain in first and then in second getting rpms up so as to load drivetrain. That should determine whether to tear down or not.81H Venturer1100 "The Bentley" (on steroids) 97 Yamaha YZ250(age reducer) 92 Honda ST1100 "Twisty"(touring rocket) Age is relative to the number of seconds counted 'airing' out an 85ft. table-top.

Motoman, riding the bike is out until, at least, the middle of April to get the snow, salt and sand off the roads. I figure that I have the time now to go in and have a look. If there are any problems, I hope they're obvious to the naked eye.1981 Special- currently under construction

Hey Shadowman,
Your profile doesn't say it, and I can't remember if you told us how many miles are on your bike, but I've found the later model years, ie. 81 and 82XJ's to loose their 1st gears first, then 2nd shortly, whereas the earlier years seemed to loose 2nd gear first, sometimes 1st also!?
If you're going to be going into the CLUTCHES, then going a little further and doing the tranny could be a good preventative strike. I would go ahead and perform the dremmeling no matter what you find since you're already in there, and you don't know HOW the PO(s) treated the bike, engine, tranny!?
I didn't habitually beat up on mine, but just got sporty with it on occasion...speed shifting but just mostly getting on it in 1st and second. I lost my ODOMETER function at ~900 miles, but the tripometer worked, so I never got around to getting it fixed since the special couldn't go much farther than 100 miles per tank, the tripometer was adequate. So..I calculated that I had about 40-50K miles on it before the tranny crapped out! I highly suggest doing both 1st/4th and 2nd/5th while you're in there!
