      I have a d404 130/90 on my 78, with a 1/4 inch clearance to the shaft tube/swingarm.

The 130/90 size (in both 16" and 17" sizes) is 'stock replacement' for these and will fit with no problems.

That's the correct replacement size for both models as standard anyways. Had given some thought to going to a Metz880 in 140/80x 17, but haven't yet checked the specs. for shaft clearance.

I know that at least some are running 130/70-17 on standards. I know that's what I read somewhere and it's what came on my G when I got it. However what I discovered is that the 70 puts the tire at almost exactly the same diameter as a special (good for acceleration) and make one nervous about how much it leans on the side stand and makes for a pretty large drop off the center stand.

Between the change from 70 to 90 and the FD swap I dropped RPM's by about 1k in 5th gear.

The maximum width tire you can fit (without swingarm mods) is 5.45" wide, and that's reducing clearance to near-zero. A 130/90 will run about 5.25" wide, give or take a bit. Some have fitted a 140/90-16 Dunlop Elite II rear, but found that if you get the white-letter version the raised letters rub badly.

Don't know, could be that is what they are, been a few months since I have even seen them. They are wrapped up in a tarp in the corner. According to the book though, 4.5 h-17 4pr, is more like a 120/90.

You want to be careful using those 'conversion' charts from inch sizes to metric sizes. That will give you a tire that has an equal load rating, but actual size can be way off. The 4.50H-17 OEM tire was 5.25" wide and about 26.5" in diameter, which is actually larger than a current 'metric' 130/90-17...
