  • Bike Shuts Off: Fuse

As I was cruising along the road, admiring the majestic valleys and peaks, smelling fresh cut grass and seeing people driving while on the cell phone.....

The bike decided to shut off.

My first instinct was to check the kill switch. Flipped in on and off. Contact Good.

My second instinct was to check the ignition switch, It was on, but no power.

I got of the bike, pulled out my Leatherman as to cut off the tie wraps holding the side cover on, and checked the fuses. None were blown, but the copper contacts on the main fuse were a little loose. I took the fuse out, pinched the contacts, and put the fused back in. Voila!

This has happened multiple times, and it gets kind of annoying pulling over to do this simple task. (I'm running out of tie wraps, too)

I'm thinking about changing out the fuse box to manage blade type fuses.

Is it worth it or is there an easier fix?

This DEFINITELY worth it!! The new fuse block is $11 shipped from TopCatGr58, and you just add fuses. Takes maybe an hour to do the swap if your OEM fuse box is still there and all the wires are clean. The trickiest part is moving the main fuse from the left side of the bike, over to the new fuse box, but it's really not difficult.

Yep, totally worth it so +1. That said, someone recently came on here that found a source for replacement clips for the stock fuse box if you want to keep it as close to original as possible. It's not something that matters to me, but to some it does matter.

Hello- I dont know where you live in PA that you will smell fresh cut grass as most of the state has had quite a bit of snow the last month.Regardless make the change and do the fuse block with the blade type fuses-it will save you alot of headache down the road and blade type fuses are very common.

I replaced my fuse box with a bladed type box (see my previous posts). It's easy to do and much more reliable. I modified my fuseboard holder plate slightly to allow me to mount a 4 way bladed fuse holder.

I think it's just about an essential modification on these bikes, given the number of people who've had problems with the old fuses. My own view is that an electrical system failure (more specifically, ignition) could be very dangerous indeed. I imagine overtaking a lorry. I'm halfway past it and suddenly.... NOTHING....NO POWER....... I dread to think. So, for a total cost of about $10 and about an hour's work, it's just gotta be worth doing.

That's the beauty of owning a John Deere. I can blow out the yard, and then cut the grass. Regardless that it is January
