    Are the front brake caliper pistons the same size on the standards and specials?

    Yes, it is
    79 SF Special W/ Stock all original motor @ 384,000klms
    Stock exhaust, stock airbox, XJ sump, 78E carbs, Xs1100RH seat, Bosch superhorns, 5/8ths front M/c, braided lines, sintered SBS pads, drilled discs, progressive springs, 8" 50w HID headlight 4300K, 2 x 50w HID spiral driving lights, KONI shocks, Spade fuse box

      Maybe down under, but not in the states. The Special front calipers share only bleed screws and banjo bolts with the standards, everything else is different, as is the lower fork sliders.

        Sorry, Steve.
        There's only one part number listed for the brake piston in the calipers for all the XS1100's worldwide, ever. They're all the same.
        Caliper external appeance is as different as can be but they've all got the same piston & seals

          The caliper piston for the rear brake on a Special is the same as all three of the caliper pistons on a Standard. The caliper piston for a front brake on a Special is an entirely different animal. Various people over the years have had new pistons machined in small batches because they are no longer available. Some folks got pretty close in sourcing a piston from some obscure model of import car, but IIRC, that didn't pan out. Run the search tool at the top of the page using 'caliper piston standard special' as search keys and you'll find lots of discussion.

            As Ken said, the Special front caliper is an entirely different assembly. You can now get reproduction Special pistons from at least one source; these guys:

            These fit multiple models besides just the front of the Specials as noted.

            Neither of these are available here from Yamaha (you can't even get a part number) but both can be found in the aftermarket.

            I've got sets of each apart on my bench right now, and the differences are obvious.

                      I can vouch for those replacement pistons, they are the right size. I re-built both my front calipers last year and got the pistons from hvc cycle, they fit perfectly. georgefix on ebay has the caliper seal kits if you need em.
