Right hand side is what I've always heard, and so on, but when I changed mine, the only way I could get it to go was out the left side, and back in the same. But I know more now, so maybe next time I need to pull it out, I can get the right side method to work.

It will work better if you remove the oil filter assy before you remove the engine, and I'm told that it's easier with the valve covers off, but I didn't find that I had a problem with them on. Some suggest removing the MD before engine removal, and it's apparently makes it easier, but then you gotta put it back on.
The hardest part was getting the carbs out, and then the airbox, but that was because the idiot in charge of the job took the screws out of the mounts for the airbox on the airbox side instead of the frame side (took a couple of hours to get the thing back together right).

Don't have to remove air box. undo clamps on carbs, remove mounting bolts on sides of air box and the top mount bolt.Remove lower portion of air box along with filter. Pull air box to rear removing intake tubes from carbs. It will set back out of the way far enough to remove carb bank. remove spring retainer from engine side of drive shaft boot and pull boot to rear and retain it out of the way with a small bungee cord or like as the 4 driveline flange bolts have to be remove. And yes, the motor/tranny comes out the right side, not the left.

Motoman, if your pulling the engine why NOT remove the airbox so its out of the way?
Just asking.

In any moment of decision the best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing.
Why pull the engine to do the tranny? Heck of a lot of work for the trouble. Drain ALL the fluids, take off the mirrors, turn signals on the side you are gonna lay it down on, lay a piece of cardboard or carpet down. 30 mins top and you are taking the pan off.
Must of missed something, as Camelman stated, no need to pull motor if your fixin' the tranny. Nate, guess you could pull that all out if you just like taking things apart. I do the same thing leaving it in pulling the carbs also. Without the lowers on the fairing, can pull the carb bank in less than 15min. without rushing, by just pulling upper portion of air box rearward. It hangs up and stays put out of way.

Just did a frame up resto on my XJ and I found out that the engine likes to exit the frame out the right side. All I had was the frame and the engine, everything else was removed, and it didn't want to come out the left side.
Bottom line, I put a blanket down on the right side deck, tipped the frame and engine over, and removed the frame off the engine. After that you just right the engine and do what you must with it.
Cywelchjr is right in that you should remove the oil filter assembly to facilitate the removal of the frame off the engine, for sure.

Oil filter is a must as I figured out. If you check out the video on the first post of my build thread you can seee at the end were the bike goes down and back up with the engine still inside. we tried it on its side and fubared the drive shaft boot once the oil filter was off it came out so easy the two of us just lifted it off the frame. had I just thought of that before I screwed up a hard to find boot!
YICS!!!!
post some pics of the job. I'd love to see it.
Pull the carbs,
take the air box mounting bolt lose
slip the air box back alittle
pull the motor mounts.
drain oil
pull oil filter cover
Not neccasarly in that order.
have a buddy help you lift it out the right hand side.
