  • xj1100 rear brake help

    Hey,

Putting my brakes back together after being apart for the past 6 months and I am not sure if I have it correct. At least I have no parts left over, a good start in my books! I know that the caliper needs to be able to swivel on the rotor but there seems to be a large space inbetween the caliper and the mounting point that seems to be missing some sort of spacer. Am I missing a part or is this how it goes? I stopped tightening up the mounting bolt because it is going to bind the pads soon (between the caliper and the mounting point, you can see it in the picture). What am I doing wrong?

I also posted this over on the xjbikes forum but I cannot post photos there for some reason so I could not get the help I need.

This is what it looks like now.

There is a thick flat washer (#10) that should go between the O-ring and the caliper bracket.

Yep, that big washer is missing. It fills in that whole space.

        Thanks guys!

I don't remember seeing it when I took it apart (bike was a non-running POS when I got it). I boxed all the pieces and haven't thrown anything out so I'll dig through what I have and see if I missed it. May have to make one or source a used one if I can't find it.

        Thanks again!

Thanks Phil! Man you are really on the ball!

Had a dig through the parts box and I couldn't find it. I did find one that is at least very close. The only washer that I could find that was near that size is a chrome washer (Or at least it used to be chrome) which is 4.35mm thick and 27mm round. I think this was one of the washers for mounting the shocks. I'll see if it works tomorrow without binding the brake pads.

beat me to it as I pulled the washer off the parts bike to check it out.

The shock washer center hole is 8mm and the caliper one is 6 IIRC. Could always just stack some fender washers if need be.

I've been thinking the same thing. And pretty sure its the same as the special fronts in case anyone close to you has an extra.
