    XS or XJ

    Hey there Darookie,

Well, first, if you go to the Links section, you'll find one for an owner's manual for the 81 series standards/specials which will help you out somewhat in finding the oil drain and filter.

Secondly, if you go to the Specifications section, and look in the serial numbers section, you'll find a breakdown of bike models by their serial #. Your number can be found on the right side of the steering yoke of the frame, but you can also find an engine number on the top of the right side of the case. If either starts with 10M- then you've got an actual 82XJ, but if it starts with 4R or 4T, then you've got an 81 most likely, and someone goofed up when they registered or titled it! There are also lots of pictures so you can look around and see what closely looks like yours. The XJ's are fairly different, with curved wheel spokes vs. straight, and multi-piece rectangle and round handlebars vs. all solid round type, and several other mods, being a fancy computer type LCD display inbetween the gauges.

The gear shifter can be put on in almost any position you want to fit the angle that you hold your foot to allow you to get your toes under it to pull up easily, and to push it down with your foot without having to flex it down too far, so slide it on, and test it until it feel comfy, then lock the bolt in place....you have to pull the lockbolt all the way out first before it will slide over the shift shaft! You'll want to look in the tech tips about the second gear fix, will be a good winter project for you!! HTH.
