To answer your other question as well, yes you would have to up your jets if you go with the individual pod air filters. I would suggest though that you get the bike running and set with the airbox first, it is MUCH easier to tune the bike in with the airbox. Then if you still want to go with the pods then switch over to them and rejet accordingly.

Another thing to watch out for with the pod filters is that some of the cheap brand pods have a lip on the inside of the carb boot that will block off some of the jets that are on the intake lip of the carbs. So you need to watch out for what filters you get cause if those jets are blocked off everything gets messed up and your bike will run like crap.

Do the carbs from the outside look identical? Maybe you stated the year of both bikes and I missed it, what year is each (check the vin of the engine and the steering neck, could be different). There isn't a difference in the carbs according to standards and specials, its early vs late model that matters. The carbs changed for the 80 model year and the carbs that year are sort of funky, by that I mean there are early style late style and a bastard hybrid style as well. If they look the same everything would interchange, even the carb bodies can be swapped as long as you exchange 1 for 1, 2 for 2 etc (i will say this does not necessarily apply to the bastard carbs).

I can't say what interchange for sure between the styles, so I won't try and answer that.

There's not a lot of interchange; you can swap carb tops (cast for steel or vice versa), most of the linkage bits, floats (although they should be all one type; either brass or plastic), fuel tees, and I think float bowls. The slides are different so no go there, and while some of the jets will interchange the sizes are much different due to internal differences.

they're both 1980s a 3j6 (the special) and a 3h5 (the standard) and look identical cross referencing them in the service manual says there both 30 millimeters and the only differences between them are the main jets and the jet needle but to tell if they're early 80s or late 80s im not sure how to tell

When you pull the float bowls is there a screwed in plug over the pilot jet? If there is not is there a small black plug filling in a hole between the main jet tunnel and the pilot jet tunnel?
