Welcome to the madness. Sounds like its got the notorious 1st/2nd gear issue. Easily fixed.....search and read here on the forum. Also may have a weak shifter shaft return spring. Once shift side cover is pulled may find the tranny issue has caused other issues..........no panic, all can be fixed. Lots of good info and good help here to get it all corrected. Meanwhile, would'nt ride it before fixing or there will be several other fixes you'll be doing as a result of suspect initial issues it has at the moment.81H Venturer1100 "The Bentley" (on steroids) 97 Yamaha YZ250(age reducer) 92 Honda ST1100 "Twisty"(touring rocket) Age is relative to the number of seconds counted 'airing' out an 85ft. table-top.

You probably have a weak shift spring too though. Nothing all to bad to fix. Post your location, someone may be near to help out as well.Nathan

Sounds like your floats are not closing, and octy is failing if you have one, as well as petcocks leaking if you had them closed. Lots of people here to give advise, so don't be afraid to ask questions no matter how small they may seem, its how we all learn.
Post some pics of your ride, we like pictures!Nathan

yup its the floats but the number 3 and 4 carbs are no good cuz the previous owner decided that messing with the gas air mixture screws would fix it and jammed the factory seals down on top of the screws and also the 1/2 inch thick gasket making material all over the inside of my engine makes me think he didn't know what else he was doing. i have the engine torn down and out of the engine haven't split the cases yet the transmission doesn't seem to have any wear or tear the dogs look fine and the gears are not rounded off and seem to shift fine.1980 xs1100sg

The dogs barely engage as it is normally so it really does not take much ware to cause it.Nathan

Pretty decent looking Special; interesting custom tank. Somebody spent some time on that. The bike is definitely worth saving...
Your parts bike is a standard, so pay attention when trying to swap parts.

What do you plan to do with the extra set of carbs after you swap? If your goong to get rid of them I would take them off your hands for ya.
That tank on your special is pretty sweet. Can you tell if it was done in metal or in putty?Nathan

The carbs are NOT the same on the two bikes! You can put either set on, and it will work well, but you cannot MIX the two carb banks(bodies). If you go to ebay, and search for georgefix, he can set you up with any kit you may need to repair the carbs and petcocks. Unless the PO has really messed up the carbs, they should be fixable.
I like the "fender ornament" you have in the first picture. Looks like something I used to have running around years ago!
