This is a long story and a winter build so I'm not sure where to post it.
I have bought parts from parts n more per this site.
The parts I got so far have either fit the 80sg or my 78 but now I need special parts and they are different so thank you for your input.
At least I know what model to buy for.

Yes, alot of the parts are interchangable between the special and the standard, certainly the engine components. Yet, many of the cosmetic components are not. So I recommend to check a good parts fiche or ask on here if the parts are the same before ordering. There have been several components I thought were certainly the same and yet wound up just ever so slightly different.

Even with the engines you want to be a bit careful; there are differences (pistons/head, cams, ignition components) between the '78-79 and '80-81 motors that can cause issues when swapping parts. The only two US-version XS models that have 100% parts interchange (even where slight part differences exist) are the '78-79 E/F standard bikes. All the rest (starting with the '79 Special) have at least a few year/model specific parts (usually cosmetic but not always) that can drive you crazy.

It's interesting to note that the Special apparently was only sold in the US/Canada, and while even the non-US-spec standard was slightly different from it's NA brother (mostly peg and rear turn sig location), it's styling remained similar to the '78E for longer than the US model...

When I bought this 80 sg the dealer said he had the title and would dig it up and get it to me.
So far he can't find it and although I have the guys name that owned it I can't find him.
I can get a salvage title but I can't have the engine and frame with the same vin#.
The 78E I have the title for. When I got it 10 years ago and it took me 5 years to get around to getting it running; the frame was cracked I should say broken off in some places and had been welded in 4 places and it looks like a 5 year old did it.

I'm going to take the motor off the 78 and put it on the 80.
I want to cut off the back of the 78 frame and build it into a Bob and mount the 80 motor on it. That way I can get a salvage title for the 78.
I do have pictures on my bucket list.

I have found the front fender on the 78 doesn't fit on the 80 I'll have to redrill it.

I'm open for thoughts on this what do you think?

Just pick up a special fender; they're not hard to find and will fit/look better. Even after redrilling the mounting holes on the standard fender, they still don't quite fit right.

As far as the title, if you bought from a dealer I'd turn the screws on him and make him spit it up...

so far the fenders I have found don't look much better than what I got.
I might paint the fenders same color as I do the tank.

Tomorrow is cleaning day I'm backing the truck in and collecting all the parts I'm not going to use and it's back to the shed with them. I can't find the rear fender, the work bench is full and it's time to get a little organized.

I have some stuff I need to powder coat and can't get to the equipment to do it.
I'm always doing 10 projects at a time on the can you fix this quick list my wife thinks up.

I've done the drilled out Standard front fender on the Special. JMHO, it looks fine, barely visible holes at the lower rear. I think the Special fender looks beter than the Standard's. It doesn't have that crease along the sides which rusts out.
You gotta remove that tack welded washer though, which is a hassle.

I did almost the exact same thing with the XS850 I have. I got the bike and title, but the registered owner signed it over and the buyer never titled it. He signed on the next line and handed the title to the guy I bought it from. Of course that voids the title... The registered owner is nowhere to be found, so I am going through the court to get it re-titled to me. I pad the same amount for my 850 too!

As for fenders, check ebay. They are all over the place, and in really good shape. The XS850SG front fenders are the same as the 1100 Special, so you can swap freely. I know I've seen several good ones for $25 lately.

same thing happened on my title. Guy sold and everybody signed the title...about 12 years prior to me buying it. All I had to do was contact the last titled owner and he signed a "wrong name on title" paper and it was mine. Called him and mailed him the paper, he signed it and mailed it back to me.

I'm jumping through similar fiery hoops on mine. I bought it from a guy in Washington, who bought it from a guy in Idaho. Idaho-guy bought it from his neighbor, and never re-titled it, just signed it as the purchaser. Washington-guy bought it and also didn't transfer the title. When I bought it, I was so focused on what kind of shape the bike was in, I didn't pay much attention to the paperwork. DMV says all they need is the bill of sale between Idaho-guy and Washington-guy. Washington-guy is not returning my calls or responding to mail. So now I have to try to reach Idaho-guy and get him to sign a DMV form for me. Hopefully he'll be more responsive than Washington-guy.
