  • What kind of carbs are used on XS-XJ 1100?

I have a friend who has an XJ 1100. He tried to clean his carbs and ended up breaking the float support off on one carb. Needless to say that one is trash. Well anyway I have a set of Mikuni BS34s from an older twin cyl yamaha that I think I can get working if I use all of the parts from the other carb. My question is if the 1100 used the BS34s or did they use another carb?

Don't toss that carb body just yet. it may be salvagable. I haven't personally had to do this(not yet anyways!!) but other people have repaired broken posts and also ran the carb with one broken post. Several repair methods have been tried, can't remember off hand which was the best but I am sure someone will let you know.

Post can be repaired. You drill a hole in both sides and use a metal pin with gas proof epoxy. Rob Reil at www.motorcyclecarbs.com will do this for you, and he may be able to tell you the difference between the s and non-s carb. He also has lots of hard to find parts. The 80 XS11 uses a BS34 II (mark 2?) I think. The 78-79 use a BS34 as far as I know. Not sure what 's' means.

The XJ uses the Mikuni BS 34 carb, but with a few variations.

        1. Choke linkage is a bit different, XJ uses a handlebar mounted, cable-operated choke instead of a straight mechanical linkage.
        2. Airbox side diamter is 54mm instead of the older 52mm. If you look at listings for individual Pod air filters you will see the larger size listed for the XJ.
        3. XJ is jetted leaner than other bikes that don't use the YICS induction system.

All of these differences can be overcome if you swap in an older or different BS34 but it may take some 'tweaking' to get it working right.
