Hello, I'm new on the forum so let me welcome to all of you. This year I have started a renovation of my XS11 Special and I've stopped becouse of engine problems. I have read the forum so I know that there is no chance to get complete pistons for the first oversize. That's why I'm asking for advice - which way is better to go: big bore kit or simply rings for the first oversize with standard pistons? And another thing - where in US can I buy it (in Poland where I live it is very difficult to buy parts for a bike with american VIN number)?

Are the cylinders still within spec?

If so, you can use 1st over rings and file the gap. Right now we have someone working with a ring manufacturing company trying to get a set of standard sized rings as well.

If the cylinders are not in spec then its big bore or find a new (ie ebay used) set of jugs.

Oh yeah, welcome to the form as well! Have you checked out the UK xs 1100 forum as well yet?

Just for out of curiosity how did you come to the conclusion you need rings? Am not suggesting you don't. Is the engine disassembled?

Bike was running very poor and there was oil in the airbox. Engine is disassembled now - my mechanic says that piston rings are warn.
I haven't checked the UK forum - it's easier for me to buy parts in US (I have family there).

Just a dumb question, but how do you know which big bore kit to order? Do you have to measure the cylinders and then order according to that, or do the BBK come with new cylinders and you order the standard size?

You have to have the cylinders bored and or re-sleeved to the pistons.

I'm looking into this for my XJ1100.

Total Seal Rings can make custom rings.

You need 1.2mm top ( original is chrome faced)
1.5mm second ( original is taper faced)
                2.8mm 3 piece oil

I would recommend the Maxseal rings as they have a gapless top ( actually 2 rings in one groove) .
I have seen engines gain 10% power and longer engine life with these rings.
I won't build an engine without Total Seal Rings!

You can google them or link thru www.summitracing.com .
