  • how air box drilled

    Hi guys,
i was trying to find a thread on the proper spots to drill the air box. I was considering doing it.Does it help performance at all, does more air now mean i need a richer setting? Im running accels and k+n filter, middle setting on jet. plugs are tan with present stock airbox set up. Is there really that much difference drilled or not.If there is a difference what are some of the tweeking tips after drilling.
    Thanks Steve

unfiltered air enters the box in the center of the filter.

I did it, but really didn't see any performance gain. I don't think it gains you anything. The XS seems to breathe well enough without it.

With a good performance 4-1 and a k&n filter and bigger jets, a drilled box will give you more kick at higher revs. I felt the dfference on my 78e. Not a big difference, but enough to notice. Every little gain is still an improvement I reckon. 10 or so 1cm holes between the rear wingnuts does the trick.

i was wondering if it is better to get 4 individule aif filter instead of a k&n filter

I had to dismantle my airbox completely during my 'big bore' saga (long story). It seemed to me that the unfiltered air was drawn in from under the seat throught a rubber boot which forms a seal on the outer and inner chamber of the airbox.

If this is the case wouldn't drilling holes in the outer case of the airbox just allow unfiltered air to enter the carbs since the air is drawn into the centre then passes through the filter to the outside of the box?

            Just a thought...

It depends where you drill the holes. If you drilled through the sides of the box, then yes, you would be allowing unfiltered air into the motor. If you drill only in the middle section of the bottom of the box, the air will be filtered like the air coming in through the rubber snout.

                Thanks Ken!

Is there any chance of a pic of this when done properly?
