  • Using RTV Below Freezing?

I need to reinstall the oil pan on my SH. I am working in an unheated garage with the temperature between -5c and - 10c.

Will Ultra Gery RTV gasket maker set in these temps?

Even cold, both surfaces cleaned with Brak-Kleen or similar and a THIN film on case surface will seal fine. Ultra grey is what I used on the pan and clutch cover on mine some three years ago......not even a seep and neither cover has a gasket. Just take a bit longer to set up when cold............

Yep, it'll do just fine. You might want to keep the tube in your pocket until just before squeezing though, to make it softer. The temps of the running engine will be more than enough to cure it later.

If you can spare the extra few $'s there is a product called "the right stuff" in a can that works without so much prep. It can be applied without being absolutely sure that all oils are removed, and can be torqued down immediately, instead of needing to wait an our after finger-tightening the parts like you have to with the tube stuff. The applicator makes for a nace, clean, one-handed application, in a nice bead all the way around the part. Not nearly as messy as the tube stuff can get.
