    Re: Forward Controls

I was just about to post the same question!!
I've been looking high and low for over a year now for forward controld for my 1981 xs1100 Midnight Special with no luck.
If anyone has a source I would also be extremely interested.
I'm about to have a buddy mill me a set, if I can figure out how they would need to be designed.

Many Thanks for any input on forward controls.

...in my business complex there's a machine shop, and the owner asked me if there was anything I'd change on my bike if I could. I told him on long distant rides a forward control setup would be more "comfortable", if you could stretch your legs out. I showed him an XS 'chopper' that was posted on the XS11 site a few weeks back. He looked at the controls on it and said that he would be interested in producing some foward controls...
But, they'd be billet aluminum, and wouldn't be cheap - he told me they'd be pushing ~$300 for something "done right"

My only concern would be the 'engine guards' - they would probably have to come off... I kind of like the 'insurance' they provide for the side casings...

      ...any thoughts...??

I have fabricated several sets of rear control for the XS. I have taken a look at this in the past, but since I don't ride in that configuration, did not pursue it.

On of the things I remember about forward controls on the XS is dealing with the width of the XS side cases and case protector bars.

I believe that the stock control would need to be kept functional. This was not required with rear controls.

My wife rides a Special and had fold-up foot pegs attached to the case protectors. Her new Special does not have them and she has request they be installed. Perhaps I should take a look a forward controls for her Specail.

Ebay has one. The only thing is it seems like every couple of months it looks like the same one is for sale. I'm wondering if people buy it, try it and don't like it. Then post it on Ebay again.

...did a NET search and found out forward controls are available from Jardine - But for $638.
...I think I'm gonna make a set out of stainless steel and just polish them - I don't need billet aluminum or chrome...
I hope to get all the parts for <$250 and do the labor myself... I think this is just one of those items that are gonna be a "one-off". IMO if it were a 'popular-wanted-item' the market would be flooded with several companies making different versions...

...now if I can figure out how to make a better stainless steel 4-into-2 system that would be my next project...

Another option might be to buy a set of used forward controls (or rearsets) and adapt them to the XS11 for forward controls. Some riders remove their bike's stock forward controls and put billet units on for a custom look. I have no idea which stock controls from which brand of bike might adapt on the XS11 with some mods, but it would be likely be a fairly easy project for a machinist or welder. Probably cheaper than machining new billets from scratch, too. Just thinkin out loud.

This has been done a few times by some of the guys on this list. Do a "search", and you just might find some old posts on how they were made.
I remember that one of the listers bought a used set from an old Goldwing, and was able to use the majority of the parts. This way you only have to modify/make a smaller portion of the set-up.

                Good luck

                  found pics!

                  http://members.socket.net/~joshr/fcontrols/

Searched through the other threads as suggested and found a link to a photo album that had some picture of a bike with forward controls. I looks as though maybe just a couple of small parts were fabricated, otherwise most of these controls were bought, I'm not sure what company though.

Here is an eBay number for a set of Goldwing floorbaords, with the toe/heal shifter and extended brake rod.
It would get you started anyway.
                    Good luck

                            controls

it would probly take a few heim joints and threaded rod to make forward controls. Most forward con. use heims and rod to lenghten to the front of the frame. So you would first get the pegs were you want them thenbuild the rods to get to a comfortable position to use them. Heim joints are commonly found at airport parts stores, or race car shops. They are widly used in both industries.

i like my highway pegs. it gives me the opportunity to stretch out on long highways rides, even if i have to fold back up for the occasional stop sign. but i find that even stretched out for an hour or so, my knees get sore, and tucking em back into the regular pegs feels pretty good. So I'm glad to have two different possible positions. So for 20 bucks, i have my highways pegs, and an option when i get sore.

But if you're set on forward controls, you see them on ebey occasionally, but not too often. if they're not there now, keep checkking, they'll be back.
