    Hi Nate,
I would ask you that question because only one of us is an electronics tech, and it ain't me.

If you're asking if it's possible to convert the XS tach to a 'conventional' input, the answer is no. While the FSM is silent on the internal circuitry of the tach, you can infer by the signal that's sent to it that it:

Needs an AC input, which you can't get from a DC spark ignition.

And uses more 'pulses' per engine revolution (due to the large number of poles on the alternator stator) than what a spark ignition can supply. The XS motor will only fire twice per rev, being a 4-cylinder motor.

The tach is really a AC frequency meter, with the meter face calibrated to read RPM instead of CPS.

Unfortunately, the above statement is too often true. There's several threads in the achives about opening these up for repairs (search for speedo repair), but they never do look quite 'right' after doing so. Tach repairing has been even less fruitful, so most owners just end up getting another unit. The upside is the '85mph' speedo/tach gauge sets are less popular so usually sell for less, so finding a replacement tach isn't all that hard.

There are outfits out there than can repair/restore almost any motorcycle gauge, but at prices of $150 and up (for these, figure 'up'), not a real practical alternative...

Tom I found it on www.blackhawkcustoms.com however, I suggest you check out the website for the makes, you can purchase it from them for the same price, but any questions you have they can answer better... their website is http://www.trailtech.net/index.html and they have a variety of other products you might like if you like that one... also the better model has the tach on it, i realized after i found that one that it didn't actually have the tach, that one is the Vector...after researching i found that the Vapor would be a better model for our needs...
