I put away my 79xs11 for the past 6 months now. I want to give one last shot on the carbs. I never did sync them with any bought gauges (I know many here are saying I should have) I can get it running and it idles fine. The only problem is getting on it and riding it down the road. It bogs down when under load. I'm thinking the floats are the problem. Everything electrical worked fine before the rebuild, so I'm thinking the floats, (not enough gas in there. I also use pod filters, but it ran fine before with pods and no rejetting. If this is not the problem it might be time to sell. I don't ride that much anymore so it might be time to let this one owner bike go.
    Any thoughts.

What exhaust do you have? Most everyone needs to rejet with pods so I would say that may be part of it, and the carbs do need to be synced. It made a HUGE difference for me.

If you still have your airbox, try running it that way, it's more forgiving, JMHO. Only do one change at a time though. JAT

Rich, these bikes will never be right with one last shot. It is a constant effort to get them to a reliable state . And then with no absolute sureness of new issues coming forth.

Maybe you should . I wanted to give up, but I'm riding now. Plus 1 . Giving up would have been easier. No offense intended. PM me if you want to keep trying.

Don't give up the ship!!! On my last carb job, bike idled fine, synced with carb stick and responded well to snapping the throttle open in the garage. A ride proved it would fall flat on its face but eventually pickup RPM. I found one of my slides were hanging up and I had put a diaphram back on wrong. Fixed the sticky slide and diaphram and it was all good. While not real finicky, these bikes do require some patience sometimes. Once you get them dialed in, there a real trip to ride. Put everything back like it was, check your carbs out again and you will get it going.

I would not suggest giving up....unless of course you want to ship the bike to me, then you can give up!!

You mentioned doing a rebuild. If you mean rebuilding the engine, then you changed the compression of the engine some. This can and will effect the draw through the carbs and possibly the jetting requirements, especially with POD filters. The POD filters seem to make these beast a bit more finicky than the stock airbox as Phil mentioned.

I'd start with where you last had it that it ran decent, check the plugs, and adjust based upon what you find. That process does take time and effort.

#1 if you switched to pod filters I'd think you would have to rejet.
#2 Do the pod filters have stacks in them? Or are they the kind with the rubber lip inside that covers up some of the carb breathers on the edge of the intake parts? Before I put stacks in mine it would bog out under a load from that alone.
#3 Maybe it's not the carbs at all, it could be broken pickup coil wires that loose conection under a load.
#4 If you want to pay, I know a guy you can send the carbs to and have him set it up for you. PM me for info.

Did you use carb kits in your rebuild? If so which ones? There are many kits out there with the wrong parts in them. If you did use kits, get some Miki jets, do a good bench sync while they're off and go from there.
