does anyone know where I can find a good set of petcocks for my XS 1100 special SG model 1980

Lots of them on ebay. If you need both sides, a quick search brought up the following 2 items: Left side - 130459775744, and Right side - 230389980423
    1980 XS850SG - Sold
    1981 XS1100LH Midnight Special (Sold) - purchased 9/29/08
Fully Vetterized and Dynojet Kit added, Heated Grips, Truck-Lite LED headlight, Accel Coils, Irridium plugs, TKAT Fork Brace, XS850LH Final Drive & Black SS Brake lines from Chacal.
Here's my web page devoted to my bike! XS/XJ User's Manuals there, and the XJ1100 Service Manual and both XS1100 Service manuals (free download!).

They can usually be rebuilt pretty easily. Georgefix sells a rebuild kit for them. Good guy to deal with.

$25 for one petcock seems kind of expensive to me though, especially since it may well need to be rebuilt.

While you have the petcock apart, you would be wise to spend a bit of time lightly polishing up the assorted surfaces that would be in contact with the seals. The most important is the back face of the selector knob, as this rubs against the rubber seal every time you change position of the selector. And it is fairly rough as it came from the factory. A bit of time with a flat plate (I used a granite tile I bought just for that function) and some 1200 grit sand paper will produce a smooth surface that will cause less wear and tear to the rubber seal behind the selector.

Less important, but easy to do is the other gasket surfaces. They are pretty roughly machined from the factory, so a bit of polishing will produce surfaces that are less likely to leak in the future. But, as these surfaces don't move once the peacock is put back together, it is less of an issue.
