  • Middle Drive Replacement

Has anyone documented the replacement of the Middle Drive, I have not been able to find anything.

I am assuming , Rear wheel, Final Drive and shaft have to be removed, anything else I should look for?

Do I need to drain the oil first?

Might be the perfect time for the 850 Final Drive swap.

Thanks in advace for the help.

Actually, the rear wheel and drive shaft and all can stay in place. You will want to drain the drive.

You will need to remove the rubber boot behind the drive and unbolt the flange of the middle drive from the u-joint (4 bolts). Then remove the bolts attaching the middle drive to the engine. Then pull it out the left hand side of the bike.

It helps if you use a of couple bungee cords to hold the rubber boot back while you're unbolting the U joint. With the bike in gear, the rear brake lever may be used to keep the U joint from spinning while breaking the 4 bolts loose. HTH

          Help

OK, so I got all of the bolts out of it including the 4 on the drive shaft.

The problem is it will not pull out but about 1/8 inch, It is because of the inner lip that is on the hub itself. How do I get clearance for that to come out?

          Thanks, Steve

It always sounds soooooo....easy in type. And they never just slide right out like the text says.

Glad you got it out. Now the fun of getting the replacement to duplicate that same manuever you did not keep track of to get it back in.

Biggest tips on the clutch are to go slow and careful removing and reinstalling the star plate. Just move each screw a turn at a time round and round till you get it loose and again till you get them all tight. Also, pay attention to the order of where the two washers are in, and which one is in which place. When putting it back in, be careful to make sure you get both the primary gear engaged with the clutch basket AND the oil pump idler gear engaged. IT is easy to think it is just sitting a bit proud and not notice the gears are not properly engaged.

One other tip. If you are so inclined, you can pull the clutch cover and the clutch without draining the oil if you lean the bike on the side stand. This does require thought when pulling the large clutch nut not to move the bike and let it slide off the side stand.

If you don't have an impact for the clutch nut, again, use the brake pedal with the bike in gear to hold the shaft from spinning.

                      Thanks

Phil by the way that Brake pedal thing worked out great for breaking the four bolts from the drive shaft.

                      You guys are great.

                      Thanks, Steve
