  • 1980 SG in the Philippines, electrical question

Hiya all. Ive got a problem fer ya!!!! My 1980 XS11 Special developed a miss. It comes when, generally in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd gear, I reach the cruising speed for the amount of throttle Ive given it. This can be anywhere from 1500 to 4000 rpms, and when I let off the throttle slightly, and then give it just a little throttle again, it misses. Not badly, but enough to be annoying. Only misses until I give it more gas. Now, this happened over a year ago, only much worse. Anyway, yall told me about the pickup coil wires, and we replaced the main one, and it fixed it 100%. The bike is now behaving in the same way, only the miss isnt near as bad. Well, we pulled the timing cover, and one of the wires was broken completely in half. All wires were spliced, including the main one going into the timing cover. This has fixed the problem 90%, but there is still a slight miss in that situation. We have cleaned the carbs, checked plugs and plug wires, etc. Any suggestions what could be wrong??? Thanx in advance!!!

    Randy

PS- By the way, Im in the Philippines, so I cant run out and buy parts easily!!!!

I'd look at the wires all the way back to the connector from the pickup coils. Bout the oly thing that makes any sense is those pick up coils.

I'll 2nd that.... and add that it might pay to look to make sure that the location of any splices aren't preventing free movement of the pickup plate. Have you tried running the bike with the ignition cover off to see if the problem goes away?

Another thing to check about splice location is to make sure the splice isn't in a part of the wire that 'moves'; most splices will quickly fail under constant repetitive movement, particularly if they've been soldered.

I'm gonna weigh in with my voice of experience on this... Maybe it's not going to help, but what the heck.

Had a bog, hesitation, miss, whatever you want to call it on my 80 SG. It would occur at light throttle, at 1500-4000 rpm, but mostly at the lower end of that range and the bike would just go flat, "Blaaaaaaah", until I would clutch it, re-engage, then it would be fine until it did it again either right away, a few miles later or a couple rides down the road.

I checked the pickup wires, they were fine. By sucking on the vacuum line, things moved fine, and with my hand I could rotate the plate just fine and it felt like it rotated easily.

For grins, I put a shot of silicone lube on the rotating plate for the timing advance/vacuum advance, and it DID rotate a bit easier by hand. Put the cover back on and haven't had a problem since.

Even though it's probably clean as a whistle in there, it's been A LONG TIME since there was any fresh lube on the mechanism, so give that a try and see if it helps ya'.

        Let us know!

Hey, glad I finally was able to give back a tip that fixed something for someone, as I've had lots of help over the years as I've learned all about my 80 SG.

                Have a good one!
