found a 1979 Standard with 56,000 miles that's a project, hasn't run for acouple years. needs usual carb work and other minor things. complete bike for around $250. Not interested in a motor rebuild so wondering on average how many miles will these bikes go before an overhaul? I have a 78 with 43,000 miles which still has great compression and seems a long ways from needing an overhaul.

I have read MANY stories of these bikes going well over 100k miles. with no major engine work. I personally know another member here with over 80k on his SG he bought off the showroom floor. Recently got a new cam chain and valves adjusted and such. But no ring work or anything like it and so far runs like brand new!Life is what happens while your planning everything else!
When your work speaks for itself, don't interrupt.

Mine's currently done 172,000 miles. Hasn't had the head off yet. Changed camchains 4 times when they started to get a bit noisy. Doesn't blow smoke but uses a little bit of oil. Not enough to worry about, though. Still goes like a train, too.79 SF Special W/ Stock all original motor @ 384,000klms
