I buddy of mine is selling a 1979 XS1100. It has a fairing and he recently spent 600 dollars at the bike shop getting it tuned up, carb cleaned, and new tires. He is asking $1200.00 for the bike. It has 30,xxx miles on the bike. It looks clean and the side bags are in pretty good shape. The radio and speakers work, however it just needs a new antenna. I am hoping somebody can give me some advice and/or tips on the asking price. Thanks a million!

Its more a matter of what would the bike be worth to you. Its an average asking price for an xs that has been taken care of and is in decent to good working order.

Miles are lower, there are plenty of people that have well over 100k on a xs engine. These bikes are easy to work on and once you get them tuned in well its easy to keep them there.

If you can get some pics and put them up and everyone will tell you what they think of it!

      Hi pep and welcome,
there are those who'll brag they bought a good runner for far less but they were taking advantage of the seller's ignorance or of their misfortune.
For a fair deal that's an OK price. I paid a grand for mine in worse shape 6 years back and apart from gas, oil & tires I wouldn't have needed to spend a penny on it since except that I chose to turn it into a sidecar tug.

I too most likely paid more than I should've, but it's okay and am enjoying the bike. Lots of good informantion and be sure to check out the tech area, that will answer a lot of questions you may have. Good luck.

I agree that the price he's asking isn't outrageous, assuming it's a turn-key bike. If all the parts are there, and everything is in good shape, it sounds reasonable. I wouldn't have spent $600 at a shop to get it "tuned" but that's HIS loss. New antennas are available at Walmart for about $18 (I just replaced the one in my fairing) and take 20 minutes to install.

            Hi 'Bug,
to be fair, pep's post does say:-
"he recently spent 600 dollars at the bike shop getting it tuned up, carb cleaned, and new tires."
If you discount the cost of the new rubber that's nearer to $300 for a tune-up & carb clean.
Mind you, I'm way too cheap to spend even $300 for bike service work that I can do myself but some folks lack those skills.
Gawd! Mindflash back to the 1950s and Phil Hallett.
He'd bring his bike into the club workshop and we'd take his wrenches away and say "No, Phil, let it live!" and fix it for him.

You must have pricey rubber there! I get a set of tires for under $180, installed. Even still, I agree, I'm too cheap to pay that kind of money to some stranger (or anyone for that matter) to play with my carbs.

                Pricey tires

I went to the bike shop to see what all he got
done. All the previous plus new battery, plugs,
wires, and all the fluids changed. I am hoping the
side bags keep the water out!

Must not have the stock coils anymore if it had new wires put on it.
