If I get an aftermarket petcock with an in-tank screen on it do I really need an inline external fuel filter?

The petcock screen keeps out the larger stuff but the filter catches all. Unless there is an in tank filter I don't know about. Anyone?Just ME and my 82 XJ 1100. External filters are strongly suggested. As stated the in tank is just a screen for the bigger stuff.Nathan

On Thunderstruck (rest-in-peace
) I never used an inline filter, the tank was clean and never had any problems from it. On Banshee, I would not even think of taking the in line filters off, even though I lined the tank. That tank was a mess.
Now that I figures out a good way that works for me to install them, they are a nice safety net to have. I got the pyriamidal shaped ones with the gold stone looking centers in them from a local ATV and dirt bike shop for $3 a piece or something like that.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

Hi justme,
that ~3" tall filter tower atop the petcock doubles as the main/reserve fuel level selector. While I don't notice any difference in the filter pore size between the petcock filters and the aftermarket in-line filters, there's another problem.
Sometimes the petcock filters will fall off and lay in the bottom of the gas tank.
And yes, it happened to me.
This leaves the bike running on unfiltered gas and with no reserve and until the carbs plug up or you switch to reserve only to find it's already been used you'll never know it.
At least with in-line filters you'll be running out of clean gas, eh?Fred Hill, S'toon

Just think of it as insurance. Cheap insurance too!
It's not mandatory, but it's suggested, and won't hurt anything.

+1 on the small cone shaped plastic filters from any motorcycle shop. Beware of the MikesXS square plastic filters, they've been known to leak.2H7 (79) owned since '89

I'm rebuilding the petcocks on my 79F with the K&L rebuild kits. The bike has been sitting for quite a while and I'd like to soak the peices in carb cleaner. I have Berrymans ChemDip Carb and parts cleaner. It says its safe for aluminium and other alloys. Will it be safe to use on the on the petcock filter/screen?
