  • XS gas tank cap & petcock interchange?

O.K., I'm sure I have almost used up my quota of gas tank questions, but here is one more.

Are any of the other XS special gas caps and petcocks interchangable with the XS1100 special tank?
Or for that matter, are any of the other xs special tanks useable on a 1100?

I am finding XS1100 special tanks on ebay, but a lot of them are missing the cap or petcocks or both.
There aren't a lot of 1100 petcocks and gas caps listed though.

So will any of the other XS special models parts work?
Any place I could do the research myself?

Well, for a cap you're in luck; almost all of the same years 650, 750, and 850 special caps interchange. Even some of the 'standard' 650 caps work. You can even buy new reproduction ones from Mikes and PartsNMore, but there's been some grumbling about quality....

The petcocks, not so good. The XS11 Special petcocks are model specific according to the parts fiche. I don't understand why Yamaha changed the mounting bolt pattern for these...

Worst case, you could build some adaptors from aluminum and use some universal petcocks.

Good place to check parts interchange is here: http://www.benefiscal.co.uk/

I think it might be parts n more that has generic petcocks and the adapter plate for the special tank. Problem is you lose the reserve function of the petcocks with them, so when you run out your out...

PartsNMore does have the adpators and petcocks, and you don't lose the reserve function with them they claim. But their petcocks are pretty expensive ($30 each); you can get spiffy chrome ones from J&P for under $20, so it may pay to shop around...

maybe I am thinking of someplace else. I know the ones I am thinking of had no sort of filter tower, just a screen. Don't know how you would do a reserve without the tower, but maybe there is a way.

Got my fuel petcocks from parts n more, reserve is functional, and there are various adapters to choose from. My only gripe was the gaskets that came with the adapters, too thin and too narrow; squashed out the side of the adapter with less than moderate torque. Made my own gaskets, and now have no worries of fuel leaks onto or into the engine.

              Hi Bill,
MikesXS Special gas cap will work perfectly on an XS11 gas tank.
MikesXS Standard gas cap will NOT work because it's dimensionally different although it looks the same.
The XS11 Special petcocks have smaller mounting bolt centres than the XS650 Special petcocks so those won't work.
Early XS650 Standard petcocks might possibly swap with XS11 Special ones but I've never tried it.
