Well I have decided to keep my bike! I just can't let it go. So, to get it up and running I'll have to recondition the head. I have the head gasket and valve stem seals. But cannot find any valve springs. Having an XJ and not an XS limits the parts available. I haven't phoned the dealer yet I thought I would pose the question here and see what you guys have to say about where, and what springs to get. I am sure you guys have the answers I need. Thanks in advance for any help.

This is one of those parts that you rarely if ever hear needing to be replaced, so you may want to pull the head and check the springs first. Most likely they are fine to be reused.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

Well no! I know the valves are floating so I at least need springs for No. 1 cyclinder. So if those are gone I may as well replace the lot. It's been a great bike and I would like to keep it that way.'65 Yamaha 80cc YG-1

Try here for springs. They list the '80 and '81 XS, but not the XJ. I'm pretty sure the XJ can use the same springs.

OK, I just did a "part number search" on the Vesrah site, and GG-2009 fits the XJ!!!!Last edited by DiverRay; 10-30-2010, 11:48 PM.Ray Matteis

I checked the fiche, and Ray's correct - shows the same part numbers for XS and XJ valve springs. Also shows them as being obsolete. I saw some replacement springs a year or two ago, but now I can't remember where. What I do remember is that they were incredibly expensive - around $200 for a set IIRC. You'd probably do better looking for an old head to cannibalize.
I'd also take DGXSER's advice, and measure the one's you've got before replacing. If they're in spec, you probably won't gain much with replacement springs. My 79F will rev way past red line with the stock springs - if they're in spec they've got plenty of 'push'. How do you know yours is floating the valves? Symptoms?
I've also noticed on the XS's that carbon tends to creep up the valve stems until it's well positioned to make valves stick in the valve guides. Have you cleaned your head (and associated parts) or does it still have 30 years worth of carbon in it?
The buckets can get a little sticky too. Whenever I've got a head apart, if I wind up with any buckets that don't want to go easily back into their holes, I use a brake cylinder hone and a drill to smooth the sides until the do. If you have to have new ones
Maybe this will help if you need to match some springs. Nice reminder at the top to keep the more tightly wound coils down, too.
