So I just started tearing down "SPICA" yesterday.(81 LH MNS). Finally got the floats out of the carbs. PO had deformed the pin ends for some reason so I had to grind them down then drill them out. Bit of drag but no posts got broken. Float heights were all over the place. One at 20 , one at 25 and the other two were in between. Checked the pilot screws and they to were all over the place as well. One at 4 turns and one at 1 1/4 turn and the other two someplace in between. A lot of big differences in these carbs over my 79's. Anyway my question is this. The pilot screws I removed, the tips are much blunter. measuring 0.76 mm and the new ones I got from george fix measure 0.56mm. Do I have the wrong kits or is this the new standard and doesn't matter. Also I was curious as to what the factory setting was for the pilot screws. Won't matter as I'll be colour tuning anyway. Just curious.

Cant tell ya anything about the screws. But as to the screw setting, there isn't really a hard and fast number of turns. Book says start at 1.25 turns and then bring it to a dealer. A lot is.guys use a colortune plug to set the pilot screw, and the the others set it by ear. There is a tech tip on setting them my ear. I will let someone else elaborate on the details.

Yes, the ones from George are different, but they work great. I've put them in a few sets of carbs now and always worked well.

As to the starting point, this is one of those ask ten people and get five answers things. For me, I always start at 2 turns out. Bike always fires right up, and not alot of fussing to get nice tan plugs. Others start at 1-1/4 or 1-1/2 religously. Up to you, no wrong answer.

I have a few good idle screws for those. Carbs I can take 1 to work and mic it to see I can even put it on one. Of the cmm's for fun... I can tell you that an idle screw than. Has been tightened down and broken won't be the same dia. Especially if the po turned them on a grinder...

80-81 carbs idle screws don't have sharp tips, but rather blunt tips and AFAIK don't have the over tightening issue because of this (I suspect that is why the change).
